Bac Lieu Province completes three-year education project
 |
CWS is winding up a three-year project in partnership with District Departments of Education and Training in Bac Lieu Province. This project targeted 105 of the most needy schools and included upgrading school infrastructure, installing water and latrine systems, and providing teacher training. CWS contributed to the repair and upgrade of over 100 classrooms and 18 playgrounds, and provided 340 blackboards, 800
sets of desks and chairs, and 100 bookshelves for school libraries. CWS also worked with the school officials to install 50 drinking water systems and 25 school toilets, and provide hygiene education training to teachers and students. In addition, 550 kindergarten and primary school teachers received additional skills training in specialty subjects like art, music, and sports. In total, 54,654 students and 2,644 teachers benefited from this project. |

CWS Vietnam conducts investigative trip to Lai Chau Province

From June 6-10 2005, a CWS team had made an investigation trip to Lai Chau province, the poorest province in northern Vietnam. CWS had a ten-year program in Lai Chau, which ended in 2002. Recently, the Central and Provincial Government requested CWS to resume program activities because of the large numbers of ethnic minority poor and vulnerable communities. The CWS team visited the districts of Muong Te and Sin Ho, of which one district will be selected for the pilot phase. The new project will focus on integrated development in Education, Health and Water Supply & Sanitation. A full needs assessment will be conducted in August 2005. |

Education Support Project in Thai Nguyen Province

Song Cong and Pho Yen
Districts
Taking advantage of the student’s summer vacation, construction has been active in schools and kindergartens in the last three months. In Song Cong district, 3 classrooms have been repaired, 3 classrooms are being built, and 3 new water supply and toilet systems have been installed. In Pho Yen district, 14 classrooms have been repaired and 14 water supply and toilet systems were constructed. CWS partner, the District Departments of Education, also have more time to dedicate to construction monitoring and other project activities during the summer months. |

Thai Nguyen Teacher’s Training
College
The Thai Nguyen Teachers College has been supported by CWS for the last 2 years. The objective of this 3-year project is to improve the student-learning environment through providing teaching equipment, upgrading student facilities, and building capacity for lecturers and college administrators. In May, classrooms were quipped with 126 new sets of student tables and desks, and the Foreign Language Lab was equipped with 20 new head phones and 3 new cassettes. The students and teachers of Thai Nguyen Teacher’s Training College are very happy with the new studying equipment. |

WORKSHOPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS
USDA Food Aid Conference
|
On May 3-5, 2005 the CWS Vietnam Representative, Joanne Fairley, participated in the USDA Food Aid Conference in Kansas, USA. CWS will determine the possibility of applying for USDA funds this year. |
CWS Global Meeting
|
From May 15-22, 2005, CWS held a Global Meeting in New York for CWS HQ staff and Field Representatives. The CWS Vietnam office prepared a large display of traditional crafts from Vietnam. Articles from the display were awarded to meeting participants through lucky draws. |
INGO Watsan Working Group
|
On June 3, 2005, CWS hosted the INGO Working Group on Water Supply and Sanitation meeting. Over 40 participants from INGOs, multinational organization, and consulting companies have attended. Topics included updating members on the Joint Donor-Government Review on the sector, Drought Response in the Central Highlands, and technical information on School Toilet models. |
Delegation visits

A delegation consisting of a representative from Japanese Embassy in Hanoi, and the University of Leeds (UK), visited CWS education project in Pho Yen on May 11. |
STAFF
UPDATE
Staff Capacity Training
|
In April 2005, all CWS staff had attended the First Aid training workshop at Hanoi Family Medical Practice. This training equipped every staff with essential skills of giving emergency aid and rescue in special circumstances. In addition, CWS staff also carried out in-house training on computer skills, especially Power Point and Excel. This was a good time to share experience and tips on the Office Software Package. |
Staff Family Picnic to Ha Long Bay
 |
On June 16-17, 2005, all ten staff of CWS Vietnam and their family members went to Ha Long Bay for a family picnic. We visited Tuan Chau Island, and beautiful caves in Ha Long Bay. Through traveling together and playing game activities we got to know each other better and improve team spirit. A total of 30 adults and children attended the picnic. |
