CWS Vietnam Continues to Support Education in Vietnam
 |
Tan Quang Primary School is one of several schools in Song Cong District, Thai Nguyen Province, which has received new classrooms funded by CWS Vietnam this quarter. New classroom construction is one of many activities in CWS Vietnam’s Education Program. Other activities include providing new tables and chairs, upgrading blackboards, providing music keyboards and sports equipment, upgrading libraries, and providing new playgrounds. CWS also provides incentives for teachers to upgrade skills through special Ministry of Education and Training courses. Tan Quang Primary School also received books and bookshelves for its library this quarter, and a new well and toilet
system.

Hygiene Promotion Campaign held in three northern districts

In January, February and March 2005, a health and hygiene promotion campaign was held in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and Training in 3 northern districts. The highlight of this campaign was a drawing competition for students around the theme
“Clean School = Beautiful School”. Students were asked to draw their impressions on a clean school environment, relating to the new water supply and toilet systems funded by CWS Vietnam. Prizes were awarded in several categories, with the winning entry from each school being painted on the new toilet facilities. 60 schools participated in the campaign which reached 21,553 students.

CWS supplies greenhouse project in Ha Tay Ethnic Minority Boarding
School

The Ha Tay Ethnic Minority Boarding School is the only boarding school in the province exclusively for Ethnic Minority students. Over 700 students of Muong and Thai ethnic background study here from grade 6 to grade 12. CWS Vietnam started its support for the school from its establishment in 1994, with provision of warm clothes and blankets for students, kitchen facilities, teaching and learning aids, water supply and drinking water systems. In the first quarter of 2005, CWS Vietnam has supported the school to build a greenhouse to help students practice what they have learnt in horticultural classes, as well as provide vocational training in forestry
nurseries.

Journalist Visits 2 Northern Districts

On March 4, 2005 a journalist from Vietnam News newspaper, the foremost newspaper in English language in Vietnam, came to Pho Yen District and Song Cong Town in Thai Nguyen Province to visit several primary schools. For more of this story, click

Australian Embassy Vietnam visits CWS Vietnam office
|
On March 9, 2005 Mr. Paul Kelly, the First Secretary of Australian Embassy in Vietnam, and his colleagues came to visit the CWS Vietnam office. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the midterm review process of the AusAID funded Cuu Long Delta Project, and ask CWS to share our experiences and lesson-learnt from our water and sanitation projects in the Mekong Delta and elsewhere. |
Social and Economic Development Program Visit

Jun Atienza, Associate Director for Asia and the Pacific, SED, CWS New York, came to visit CWS Vietnam March 25 and 26. Mr. Atienza visited Ba Vi District and was given and overview of the CWS Vietnam Education Program. Schools visited included the Ba Trai and Minh Quang A Primary schools and the Tan Vien kindergarten. Mr. Atienza met the children who participated in the recent drawing competition, and watched as the winning students painted their pictures on the toilet facilities. |
Staff Capacity Training

In January 2005, Mr. Ngo Quoc Dung, CWS Vietnam Program Manager, attended a 3 week training course on NGO Leadership, Development and Social Change
(NGOLDSC) training course. This course is part of the post graduate program of the School of International Training, Vermont, and was help at IIRD in the Philippines. |
Water and Sanitation Workshop

On March 8, 2005, CWS Vietnam was asked to represent the INGO community in a workshop on Rural Water Supply and Sanitation
(RWSS). The workshop was to discuss the outcomes and recommendations of the joint Government-Donor sector review of water supply and sanitation in Vietnam. |
